Family activities around Eger – Kopcsik Marzipan Museum

Did you know that at a marzipan exhibition you can see not only cute sugar figures sitting on top of cakes, but an entire room – a castle room, no less – made entirely of delicious marzipan? Chairs, tables and even the paintings on the walls are all crafted from marzipan. Nearly 1,000 kilograms of sugar were used to create this stunning exhibition. Master confectioner Lajos Kopcsik’s marzipan room even made it into the Guinness World Records, as he was the only person in the world to create such a large-scale marzipan masterpiece. Of course, this is also where you’ll find the life-sized marzipan dog! The exhibition showcasing the master confectioner’s life’s work offers wonderful entertainment for all ages. To the delight of children, several fairy-tale characters have also taken marzipan form, such as the Little Mole or Lúdas Matyi.

Family activities around Eger – Observatory

Adventure awaits, young astronomers! In the Magic Tower, visitors can explore the Specula Observatory (Astronomical Museum), the Camera Obscura (periscope), the Planetarium, the Magic Room and the Panorama Terrace, where telescope demonstrations are held at scheduled times. Through powerful telescopes, children can observe thousands of stars in the night sky – or, even during the day, search for distant parts of the city. At the Astronomical Museum, the original instruments of the Specula Observatory, established in 1776 according to the plans of Miksa Hell, can be seen. From the same era, a working Camera Obscura projects live images of the city onto a large white table. The Panorama Terrace offers breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. Telescope observations are among children’s favourite experiences, as there are few places where they can explore the distance using real scientific instruments.

Family activities around Eger – Firefighting Museum

Kids, you have to visit this place! Especially if you’d like to see – and try – what it’s like to be a firefighter. You can even sit inside a real fire engine! The museum is a unique historical, cultural and tourist attraction nationwide, offering exciting experiences for both children and adults. This is exactly what a fire station looked like in the first half of the last century. Numerous historic fire engines are on display, giving visitors a glimpse into the past, and a short film shows how these vehicles were assembled. In the back of the museum, a playground provides fun for children, while nearby benches offer perfect spots for resting or picnicking. In the playhouse, kids can take part in craft activities or try themselves out as firefighters through interactive games.

Family activities around Eger – Panopticum

Do you know what a panopticum is? It’s an exhibition featuring life-sized wax figures (wax is the same material used to make candles). These impressive works bring history to life – here in Eger, they tell the story of the Ottoman era. Nearly 500 years ago, in 1552, a massive Ottoman army marched against Europe and attempted to capture Eger Castle. Around 200,000 Ottoman soldiers fought against just 2,000 Hungarian defenders. To Europe’s amazement, the castle defenders emerged victorious. This dramatic chapter of history is described in Géza Gárdonyi’s novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon, which was voted Hungary’s favourite novel in a national poll. At the Panopticum, the characters of the novel recreate these events at their original location, bringing the 16th century to life. Visitors can even take a photo with István Dobó, the castle captain of 1552.

Family activities at Eger Castle

Every summer, Eger Castle hosts the Border Castle Festivities, featuring weapon and combat demonstrations, historical reenactments, knightly trials, playhouses, family programmes and craft workshops. But the castle is worth visiting at any time of the year, as it was here that the Hungarians defeated the Ottoman army in an epic battle. Though only 2,000 Hungarian defenders stood against a force many times larger, the castle was successfully defended. Walk up to the castle, explore its every corner, and remember that on the very stones beneath your feet once walked Captain István Dobó and his brave soldiers. At the Dobó István Museum, you can see weapons, clothing and many fascinating relics from the battle. Enjoy your adventure!

Family activities around Eger – Cserépfalu Visitor Centre

The Cserépfalu Visitor Centre opened in 2013 at the entrance of the Hór Valley, at the southern gateway of Bükk National Park. The Subalyuk Prehistoric Man Exhibition can be visited here. In the first room, visitors learn about the geological foundations and cultural heritage of the Bükkalja stone-age culture. The second room presents an expanded and renewed exhibition about the beginnings of prehistoric research in the Bükk region, the exploration of Subalyuk Cave and the world of Neanderthal man. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 and 16:00. The visitor centre also includes a conference room, restaurant, bicycle rental and parking facilities.

The visitor centre is connected to rest areas, hiking trails and a nature study path. Following the blue cross trail, visitors can hike through the Hór Valley into the Bükk Mountains. The yellow-marked trail leads to the unique rock formations of the Bükkalja, including the famous beehive stones. The red “T” trail takes hikers to the Devil’s Tower nature trail, leading to the Cserépfalu beehive stone, lookout point and the cave dwellings of Kisamerika.
